The Institute of Life is the assisted reproduction (IVF) unit of IASO, a private maternity and gynaecology hospital of the IASO Group on Kifisias Avenue in Marousi, in the northern suburbs of Athens. IASO began operating in 1996, and the group established the Institute of Life inside the hospital in 2015. The unit and its egg cryopreservation bank are licensed by the Greek National Authority of Assisted Reproduction; the licences were published in the Government Gazette on 12 December 2016. A second Institute of Life fertility centre operates in Kalamata.
After an expansion and redesign of the hospital's ground floor, the unit occupies about 1,500 m² on a single level. Its team page lists more than 60 obstetrician-gynaecologists working as fertility specialists, a clinical embryology team of more than 25 under a laboratory manager, a psychologist and nursing staff. Dr. Themis Mantzavinos is Scientific Director, and Dominique de Ziegler and Giles Palmer are listed as international scientific advisors. The embryology laboratory uses EmbryoScope Plus time-lapse incubators, the RI Witness electronic sample-tracking system, a four-stage HVAC air-filtration system with positive pressure, Olympus SLICSI and PolarAIDE polarised-light microscopy, TMC hydraulic anti-vibration tables, Octax NaviLase laser hatching and the ERICA artificial-intelligence embryo-ranking software, alongside a separate andrology laboratory. Services include IVF and ICSI, intrauterine insemination, natural-cycle and mini IVF, freezing of eggs, embryos, sperm, testicular and ovarian tissue, preimplantation genetic testing and endometrial testing.
Patients travelling from abroad are supported by IASO's International Patient Department, which provides information before the visit, checks medical data in advance, helps with travel to and from the hospital and keeps patients informed about their care during and after their stay. Appointment requests can ask for contact by Skype or telephone, and the unit offers psychological support and counselling. The hospital is about 27 km by road from Athens International Airport (ATH).
